My personal struggle with obesity began during my early college years. Like many college students, poor diet, overeating and lack of exercise led to a bigger me. I continued to put on weight throughout my graduate and post graduate studies. During this time, I experimented with numerous fad diets. Like many of you, I had some degree of success, but ultimately regained the weight only to be haunted by my tubby reflection in the bathroom mirror.
So after I finished my medical specialty as a general surgeon, I began to explore various alternative obesity surgical procedures. The Adjustable Gastric Band system with its reversible capabilities and its potential long term results sparked my interest. I was confident that the lap band procedure would help me reach my weight goals. But for personal reasons (lack of time mostly) I didn't have the band surgery until a year ago. My colleague and partner, Chief Surgeon Dr. Ponce de Leon performed my Gastric Band surgery at our Obesity Goodbye Center facility.
When I decided to have this life changing procedure, I weighed nearly 300 pounds with a BMI of 42. Within 12 months of my surgery, I had lost 82 pounds and reduced my BMI to 31. Although I still have a bit more weight to lose, I am grateful for my regained health and vitality.
I know all to well, the complex social and physical issues faced by the overweight population. I am empathetic to the plight of my overweight patients. With the introduction of the Lap Band procedure to my practice, I have had the pleasure of helping others reach their elusive weight goals. I applaud you for taking an active role in your health and wish you the best in your journey.
Sincerely
Dr. Sergio Verboonen
